INTRODUCTION

Hello Friends!

Welcome to the Cognitive Era!

"Where data flows, cognition will follow"

In this blog you will learn how a cognitive system reacts to a human user and what are the uses of these systems.

WHAT IS COGNITIVE COMPUTING?

Cognitive Computing is the simulation of a human thought process

in a computerized model. Cognitive Computing involve self

learning systems that use data mining, natural language processing

to mimic the way a human brain thinks.

QUALITIES OF A COGNITIVE SYSTEM

  1. Adaptive:They must learn as information changes and as goals and requirements evolve. They must resolve ambiguity and unpredictability.
  2. Interactive:They must interact well with users so that the users can define their needs of comfort. They must also interact with other processors, devices and Cloud devices.
  3. Iterative:They must aid in defining a problem by asking questions or additional source of input if the question is incomplete.
  4. Contextual:They must understand, identify and extract contextual elements such as meaning, syntax, time, location, appropriate domain, user's profile and regulations.

WHAT IS WATSON?

Watson is an IBM supercomputer that combines artificial

intelligence(AI) and sophisticated analytical software for

optimal performance as a "question answering machine".This

machine is named after the founder of IBM-

Thomas.J.Watson

WHAT ARE THE FUNDAMENTAL

FUNCTIONS OF WATSON?

  1. Engagement:The cognitive systems like Watson change

the way humans and systems interact. In this case

cognitive systems play a role of an assistant except that it

doesn't get tired and can consume vast amount of

    structured and unstructured data.It can

reconcile ambiguous and self contradictory data and

    learn.

  2. Decision:
These systems have the capabilities to make

decisions. The decisions are purely based on the

evidences and facts provided and continually evolve as

new information is provided.Currently these systems act

as advisors and only suggest a set of best options to the

human users and ultimately the humans make the

    decisions.
  3.  Discovery:These systems can also discover things

which even the most brilliant human beings could not

    do.Discoveries include finding insights,connections and

vast amount of data around the world. With increasing

amount of data, it is a need for the system to exploit more

effectively on the information than humans could do

    on their own.

    HOW DOES WATSON DO IT?

Watson first needs to learn a new subject before it can answer questions about  it.

           FIRST WATSON LEARNS THE SUBJECT

·        All related materials are loaded into Watson, such as Word documents, PDFs and web pages
·        Questions and answers pairs are added to train Watson on the subject

·             Watson is automatically updated as new information is  published

THEN WATSON
ANSWERS THE QUESTION

·        Watson searches millions of documents to find thousands of possible answers
·        Collects evidence and uses a scoring algorithm to rate the quality of this evidence
·        Ranks all possible answers based on the score of its supporting evidence

WATSON'S SPORT SKILLS
Watson's deep learning, natural language and vision

capabilities are powering Watson Golf Pro from Spare 5. The

cognitive app is a personal caddy that amateur players can

consult while at the driving range or on the course. It's been

trained with a corpus of knowledge from contracted golf

professionals on mechanics and drills. By "seeing" a golfer's

swing, the app can provide feedback for improving that swing.

In the US open, IBM has always demonstrated their

technology chops. This time it is Watson that will be doing the

job.Watson will help the commentators in their facts and

knowledge as it would give the analytics of how well the

player has played before and what could be the chances of him

winning this match.

WATSON'S HEALTHCARE FACILITIES
  1.    Analyzes the patients medical record.

Watson for Oncology has an advanced ability to analyze the

meaning and context of structured and unstructured data in

clinical notes and reports, easily assimilating key patient

information written in plain English that may be critical to

selecting a treatment pathway.

2.Identifies potential evidence based treatment options
By combining attributes from the patient’s file with clinical

expertise, external research, and data, Watson for Oncology

identifies potential treatment plans for a patient.

3.Find and provides supporting evidence
Watson ranks identified treatment options and provides links to

supporting evidence for each option to help oncologists as

they consider treatment options for their patient.

FIVE STUDIES A COGNITIVE SYSTEM

DRAWS ON

1.Big Data

2.Artificial intelligence

3.Cognitive experience

4.Cognitive Knowledge

5.Cognitive Infrastructure.
